Excellent Quality and High Transmission Distance for Lithophanes and HueForge Applications
Sunlu has a checkered history for quality, especially with their hardware. But their filaments have been pretty reliable. Their “meta” line, however, has been fantastic. And since this one has a very high “transmission distance” it is perfect for my HueForge prints and my lithophanes. In fact, this is going to be my “go to” filament for high-quality white projects going forward.

Bought this specific material to print miniatures on FDM printer. Results are great compared to regular PLA.Precision is great, strength is good, need to be careful somewhat but removing supports is doable.For anyone wondering, I use bambulab A1 mini and got the print profile from Fat Dragon Games website. It’s free there.

Sunlu Meta PLA is an excellent filament for use with high speed printers such as the Bambu A1, A1 mini, or QIDI coreXY printers when combined with a 0.2mm nozzle AND high detail printing profiles such as those from Fat Dragon Games. Probably other high speed CoreXY / Voron style machines with a 0.2mm nozzle as well. It prints decently on my old heavily modded E3V2 with linear rails and a Micro Swiss linear rail print head and 0.2mm nozzle, but not as well as it does on my A1 Mini. It’s OK on my Ratrig VMinion, but that printer does not function well with a 0.2 mm nozzle so it’s only been tested with a 0.4 mm nozzle.You CAN print HO scale figures, small track side structures or details, and 28 to 32 mm miniatures with near resin quality with this filament and the right profiles. After testing this out with a single roll of Meta, I’ve ordered three more rolls just to keep on hand.If you try using it on your run of the mill bed slinger as a general purpose filament you will likely be disappointed by the stringing and print quality. I’ve also seen this with other makers high speed formulations, it’s not unique to Sunlu. So – GREAT filament for my needs, COSPLAY folks probably won’t find this filament very useful. Even if you can print fast, using standard 0.4 mm (or larger) nozzles will not get the best from this filament. At least my printers do better using Hatchbox or Polymaker PLA+ than with this particular filament when fitted with 0.4 or larger nozzles, but to be fair I’ve never spent much time trying to perfect a printing profile for Meta with a larger nozzle.

Very Unpredictable Quality
I would not recommend purchasing Sunlu’s PLA Meta The quality is extremely variable. My first order of PLA Meta was amazing so I bought 3 more rolls, which was a mistake. These newer (or perhaps older?) rolls are unusable – it is so hygroscopic that if I do not remove it from my printer immediately after printing it will break into multiple pieces inside the feed tube. It doesn’t matter if I dry it for 1 hour, 8 hours, a full day, or even 2 days, it will become brittle after an hour sitting on the spool holder not actively printing. I won’t even mention the stringing issues I’ve been having with these new rolls, but suffice to say it’s atrocious and on par with badly dried TPU.I reached out to Sunlu for advice to see if there’s some magic sauce that could make my newer rolls work as well as the first order. That was 3 months ago and despite repeated attempts to contact them I have not heard back.If my only experience was the first few rolls I would give this 5 stars. However, I cannot and do not trust the quality of Sunlu’s PLA Meta to be consistent. Skip this stuff and buy 2.0+ or just find a different brand entirely to purchase from.Amazon’s AI is telling me this review is positive for “Value for money” and “Functionality”. In no uncertain terms: My experience has been horrible and I would not recommend you spend any money on this at all. You can pick up my rolls for free from the garbage, and it still wouldn’t be worth the time you spent digging it out.
