Reasonable Reviewer –
Potentially fun, family game – some suggested house rules to help ensure that it is
This is a review of an Amazon Vine product. That said, I try to be honest and open in all my reviews.(Please see the enclosed pictures and video.)Bottom-Line Up-Front: this has the potential to be a fun, family game. I highly recommend you adopt our house rules to ensure the game is playable and fun for all parties.Summary: Subtext Showdown is a card game for 3-6 players, ages 14+, and it takes about 30 minutes to play. The game has 100 double-sided cards with various topics on them like blond, flower, and cartoon. At the beginning of the active player’s turn, he deals out sixteen cards in four rows with four columns (4×4=16).Then, he has 45 seconds to look at the cards and come up with associations (subtext). He gets to create up to three associations (though most of the time, with the 45 second limitation, you will come up with less). Then, the players get to write down up to three associations that they saw in the cards. Now for scoring, if you guessed one of the active player’s associations, you get 3 points. Yeah! The active player gets 2 points for everyone that guessed his association. Each non-active player could get up to nine points per round, and the active player could get up to 6x the number of players.Once a round is done, the active player position rotates clockwise. The base rules say that the game ends after everyone has had the chance to be the active player three times. We found that the first person to score 15 points was a better end state. On to the Dr Games’ Criteria …GO/NO GO Criterion• Complexity: (GO) It is not complex, but it was difficult to know other people’s subtext and associations. The first few times we played there were very few points scored. (See our suggested house rules, below.)• Balanced: (GO ) The game is completely balanced.• Chance: (GO) There is chance involved, but the main factor is the ability to relate to the other players and quickly create associations. 45 seconds is less time than you might think.• Clarity: (NO GO) The rules were not clear, and we had to make some assumptions. Additionally, we added some house rules to make the game more playable.• Reasonable Time: (GO) You will be able to play an entire game in 30 minutes.Bonus Criteria• Social: There is no real interaction between players during the game aside from revealing your answers.• Unique/Interesting Mechanics: The idea of creating connotations and connections between words is interesting.• Informed: You learn how your other players think.• Rewards Throughout: Yes. You keep any points you earn.• House rules: We had two. First, we played to 12-15 points to prevent the game from going on too long. You will want to adjust the point total after a game or two to have your game last long enough to be competitive, but without becoming a drag. Second, we had the active player pull out the cards with the associations. This upped the guess rate from essentially zero to everyone getting at least one correct guess each turn. All in all, this is not a complex game, and it can be fun. I highly recommend you use our house rules to help keep the game moving and interesting.

Fun Game
I ordered this and I’m not sure what it said for delivery date.I’m used to the 1 or 2 day delivery time Prime prime offers, but this took 4 to 5 weeks. The delivery time for me on this was too long, but you may have better luck getting it sooner. We play a lot of games at this house. We have games we play much more than others, and a couple only once and get put away in the back of the game closet. Subtext will be one we will continue to play.We played this game with 4 players. It was easy to learn. My wife read the instructions and explained it to the rest of us.The box included everything you need, except a timer (their claim is that everyone has a timer on their phone, and I’m ok with that). The instructions say you get 45 seconds to pick your clue words. We didn’t actually use any timer to choose our clue words, but when I took seemingly too long, I started getting some stern advice to hurry up.They only negative I would say about the game is that there are not enough clue word cards. We cycled through them pretty quick and wished there were more. The cards are double sided, so if we got the same word we recently had, we just flipped the card over to get something different.I like that it can be played with more than 4 players. We often have 6 or more people willing to play games and it is hard to find games that can accommodate all of us. While the game says 3 to 6 players, we will probably try playing this game with 8 players when we take it back to our hometown for the holidays. So that’s a sign it’s a good game.We are willing to pack it with some other games to share with extended family.

Made for committed gamers.. cant half play!!
Some games allow for varied levels of participation.. but not this one!! Definitely for the older/adult crowd- and more than anything else.. it should have an asterix for “committed game players only!!” Game takes thought and clever word grouping- it helps to think like the group you’re playing with.. bc there is a lot of aspects to make this a success- its best suited for older and/or those who appreciate a good game!Instructions included could better to explain the process and a “category” or “subject” assigned to word associations seems almost a must- ha! we added it in and it actually helps game go smoother, more seamless + holds interest without having such a vast “anything” that words could associate with. *Yes!! I know that sounds confusing- but, for a fun and worthy adult game with a challenge and one we’ve enjoyed.. it’s worth the info. if you chose to try this. Best way to describe is mixing the TV game show pyramid together with the 20 questions game! You don’t need trivia knowledge.. as words are just random every day things- then, placing x3 together to create clues to your chosen answer.. Ha! is TOUGH.. A great option for those who like a challenge. Grateful game allows for insert of your own caveats to rules! Guess a song title or movie.. a holiday theme, sport genre, etc.)Challenging game with the niche- one we’ve enjoyed and plan to master! Hope info can help decision.. stay safe everyone.
