From the Publisher

Decorating is a skill you can learn.
People often think that the skill is picking out a room full of stylish items that function great and look beautiful together without making any mistakes. The secret is, the actual skill is understanding what to do when a roomful of stuff DOESN’T look good together.
I want to help you figure out what to do when you’re in a real room in a real house that isn’t perfect—when you can’t buy all new stuff and you’re faced with a bunch of decisions. That’s what I love to do.
I have a method for approaching big projects that begins with three mantras I repeat to myself so I won’t get overwhelmed. These mantras have helped me in my business, in my home, and in my everyday life, and this book is organized by working through these steps:
Do what you know. Use what you have. Finish what you started.
—Myquillyn Smith

Rule #1: Learn the rules to break the rules
Welcome to an entire book full of rules to decorate by written by a person who doesn’t care for rules all that much!
You are the artist and your home is your canvas. It’s imperative that you understand the rules of decorating so that when you choose to break one, it’s on purpose and not because you have no idea about the fundamentals of good design.
Break the rules so things can be better, not because you don’t know better.

Rule #27: Add a temporary fix to the mix
When circumstances don’t enable you to do what you want but also don’t allow you to wait for whatever is necessary to move forward, that means it’s time for a temporary fix.
A temporary fix is anything that holds you over so a room serves you and looks better until you can do what you want or need to in the future.

Rule #40: Hate the sofa, hate the space
If you don’t love your sofa and are ready to make changes in the room where your sofa lives, I want to encourage you that if you do nothing else than find a way to get a sofa you love, your entire room will feel better. It’s the single most impactful decision you can make. When you hate your sofa, you’ll hate your space. When you hate your space, you won’t fully use it, and that’s a waste.

Coffee table book with actual substance and cheap!? Say no more.
This will be my go to house warming gift and probably some other gifts too. It’s pretty, it’s cheap, and the writing is actually substantive and enjoyable to read! It’s practical, not overly consumeristic, but gets ideas flowing! I’m about half way in, I have found a couple small typos but it’s a beautiful book.

House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style, and Budget . . . It’s more than just a title. The author outlines 100 “rules” that will benefit all readers, whether they live in a tiny apartment or a sprawling mansion. These principles plus the corresponding photos of the author’s own home give direction rather than tell readers how their home should look. As an added bonus: Rule 12 (Admire, Don’t Acquire) has made a huge impact on virtually every area of my life, not just my ideas about decorating. Highly Recommend!

This book helped me figure out design principles for why I did like something/way of arranging a room, and why I didn’t. And I liked that she encouraged ‘shopping’ from your house inventory because it can bring a whole new freshness with a re purposed item, or arrangement.

Great read that gave me the confidence I needed to make design decisions in my house. There are many tips thaaat I have been using a lot. The only downfall is the author’s aversion to colour, being intense sometimes.

The book is written in a friendly manner that makes interior design approachable. I like colour and the book is designed around using neutrals.
