Simple functional tool
Solid metal; cuts cleanly. I’m not sure it would be easy left-handed. The start and end guide marks could be most visible.Included Allen wrench was unneeded as the adjustment set screw actually had slotted screwdriver head.

prep is forever, hassle to cut clean corners, self retracting blade spring should be stronger
I’m not a fan.I worked as a framer a few years, cut a lot of matt board in that span, plus more as a photo minor prepping pieces for critiques & shows. This is a very awkward cutter, it sucks to work with. The only indicator mark is on the far edge.Your cut mark is far away from the blade insertion point meaning you need to either mark your matt if you haven’t made any perpendicular cuts yet. or be very very cognoscente where your corner will be.No alignment marks parallel to the blade either…just fly blind, or be very conscious of your bevel’s outer positioning and cut blind thru the back of the matt. The other option is mark your matt shy of your stop, or measure and press clamp to a t-square for end stops. Also, no shoe, this should have teflon or delrin on the foot a sacrificial face so you don’t drag aluminum across your matt. Also, corners are a nightmare, to avoid plunge bite your best bet is to reverse the mat and cut from the other with the cutter back edge against your guide, problem is they bevels the back edge, so it wants to grab & slip under your guide. If you feel inventive, its ok for you, but to me the only positive point is the 45% bevel, the rest is a time-suck preparing to cut. This design at this price point is agonizingly painful.

All you need is a straight edge
I occasionally need a mat, however my local craft store will not cut customs without including the entire cost of custom framing. With this mat cutter I’ve found a way to save money and frame more. The cutter is easily adjustable for angle and depth. The blades are very sharp. It did take me a few practice cuts on scrap stock, but once I got the hang of it I could cut nearly professional looking mats. I would label this cutter as easy to use, and for the savings it creates its a good value for the money. With careful measurement I have been able to create a good double-mat.The blade can be retracted into the holder for safety. Functionality is as described. For those who need a may cutter at a good value, this is a good product.

Does the Job
This 45° Push-Style Handheld Bevel Mat Board Cutter has a retractable blade and comes with 5 blades overall, along with an Allen wrench to remove the guide tabs if necessary. The cutting mark on the back side is very light, so I did end up making it more visible. I would suggest making some practice runs to get the hang of using the tool and how it cuts before using it on any expensive mat board. I do wish it had the ability to cut thicker mats though, but it suits most of my purposes. For someone without a full mat cutting system and needs an easy-to-use DIY solution for occasionally cutting mats with a simple cutter ruler set up, this is a decent functional option at a good value.

Serviceable, if only just…
If I’m being perfectly honest, I would not recommend this specific bevel cutter. It’s serviceable, but the state it arrived in doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence in the product. By the time I decided to take some photos I had already cleaned it up a bit so some trust is required here, but (better seen in rear photo) this thing was just… nasty. Not in the “I think I got someone’s return” so much as “likely zero cleanup from the factory” sorta way. This was dust, grit, and oils all over, as well as evidence of less-than-stellar craftsmanship.Tool-wise they have chosen to include a single Allen wrench which serves the sole function of removing the pre-installed rail guides which strikes me as odd as this will either be something a purchaser never does or only does once. Meanwhile, no tool was provided (small/eyeglasses flathead needed) for the far more common task of adjusting the depth gauge. The included blades sported a small amount of rust despite being oiled (visible in included photos.)Comparing this to the “real deal” that would come with a mat cutter system feels in many ways like comparing a Hot Wheels to the actual vehicle it was modeled after; the look is there, but not the function.
